Friday night pot stirring. A very common misconception is that while you’re breastfeeding you need to drink a TON of water. Or that not drinking enough water may cause your supply to dip. The truth is that you do not need to drink gallons of water (or any other arbitrary volume you may have heard) to maintain or increase your milk supply. Studies have shown no correlation between water intake and overall milk supply.

Of course you may feel a bit more thirsty while you’re nursing and keeping yourself hydrated is good for you in general. Drink to thirst so that you feel good and your urine is pale yellow in color. Increasing your water intake beyond normal is not the solution to supply concerns! And the flip side of that is that having a few days where you don’t drink as much water for whatever reason is very unlikely to make a significant drop in supply so save your worries for the other millions of small things parents deal with!

So what can you do you about supply?? Go back to the basics - supply and demand. And if you’re struggling on your own, get HELP from an IBCLC!

Ok, I’m ready! I know some mamas will go down with their giant hydromate. What do you think? Does this match your experience?

Did you know that breastmilk is considered a living tissue? In addition to the basic building blocks of growth and development (carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals), breastmilk contains thousands of live active cells. The live active cells provide passive and active immunity to your baby, help your baby grow, and protect the gut.

What else is cool? Breastmilk changes! As your baby grows. When your baby is sick. Subtle changes throughout the day.

Living, evolving, protecting. Magic Milk

Hello there! I’m Jessica and I have a passion for all things lactation and breastfeeding. With nearly 8 years of experience both professionally and personally, I’ve got a tool box full of tips and tricks! I have an especially soft spot in my heart for prenatal education and helping families get off to the best start possible in the first few days/weeks.

My goal for this Instagram account is to give “bitesize” bits of education, tips and tricks that new families can easily digest (see what I did there?? ?) with a sprinkling of humor because laughter is the best medicine. Whether you’re currently pregnant, have a brand new baby, have a partner/spouse that will be nursing, or just love to learn - I’ll have something for you! It might take me a few days to get things fully up and running, but give me a follow so you don’t miss it!

To get a few legal-y things out of the way - this account is for educational and entertainment purposes. It is not intended to replace personalized medical advice. If you’re struggling, reach out to a local IBCLC, your pediatrician, or other healthcare professional. Every baby and nursing parent is unique and deserves a proper full assessment and personalized feeding plan.

I also represent myself and only myself. This account is not a representation of my employer or the hospital system in which I work.

Now that that’s out of the way - Let’s Talk Lactation!!
