In the early days, getting a good, deep latch can take some practice. While there is no ONE right way to achieve a good latch, there are some best practices that can help prevent a painful latch. Some of these tips I’ve shared before but I think they’re important enough to share over and over again!

I’d also like to point out that as babies get stronger and more efficient and as you get more comfortable, things will feel much less “step-by-step.” Some babies just need a little more help in the beginning while they’re getting the hang of things.

Feel comfortable experimenting with different positions and holds. Find the ones that feel natural and intuitive. If it doesn’t seem right, try something else!

If these small fixes are not helping, reach out to an IBCLC for one-on-one assessment and help!
