Reverse pressure softening (RPS) is a ...

Reverse pressure softening (RPS) is a fancy term for a technique that helps soften the areola, evert the nipple, relieve engorgement, and can help make latching easier!

This is a particularly helpful technique in those first few days of the your milk surge (usually 3-5 days after delivery) when you are most prone to engorgement. Sometimes the skin becomes so taut that the nipple will flatten out and become less elastic. This technique helps to move the edema (fancy word for swelling) away from the nipple. Edema is as much responsible for engorgement as super full milk ducts!

RPS can also be a helpful step in everting an otherwise shorter/flatter/dimpled/inverted nipple

Gentle but firm pressure held for 30-60 seconds in each of the direction a shown in the photos!
